Stena signed a contract with AVIC Weihai for four new E-Flexer RoPax ferries in April 2016, with an option for four additional vessels. Keel-laying ceremony of the first Stena E-Flexer RoPax ferry , named Stena Estrid, was held at AVIC Weihai’s shipyard in China in February 2018 and the float-out manoeuvre was made in January 2019.

Their keels were recently laid in the same shipyard in Weihai and Stena Mersey along with former fleetmate and sister Stena Lagan (lenghtened last year to increase freight capacity), was in March replaced by the the E-Flexer, Stena Edda.

In the middle of the ongoing pandemic the construction our two new larger E-Flexer ferries has begun in Weihai, China. The vessels were ordered in 2018 and the delivery is expected in 2022. The third E-Flexer vessel destined for the Irish Sea, Stena Embla, is expected to be delivered on time and will start operating on the Belfast-Liverpool route in January 2021.
