University of Eastern Finland (UEF) is a Finnish state university. Was formed on January 1, 2010 due to the merger of two educational institutions. The main building of the University of Eastern Finland is located within Joensuu. At the moment, the university takes 6th place in the national ranking.

It is also a centre for Baltic studies. The University has established relations with the University of Petrozavodsk, several universities in St. Petersburg and Moscow, the University of Tartu in Estonia, the University of Latvia in Riga and many universities in Lithuania.
